A Good Egg

Last week I had the privilege to meet an unusual entrepreneur called Mike Harris. You might not recognise his name, but you'd definitely recognise the names of some of the businesses he started: 'First Direct' and 'Egg'.

The difference with Mike is that he started these companies under a corporate umbrella (HSBC and Prudential respectively), so the funding was secure - but the downside is that corporate (and particularly banking) people are risk averse and like to meddle. But he's clearly persuasive and inspiring, and managed to get some highly creative and mould-breaking ideas past the chief executives of banks - so there's clearly a lot to learn from him.

He's now also involved in launching a new startup, using what he's learned about building businesses to build his own venture.

The interview with him about starting these businesses will be coming up on a future Momentum programme (the audio series that was previously known as Red Business).

He's also written a book called 'Find Your Lightbulb' setting out some of his ideas on how to build innovative businesses. It's a great read, and I've included a link to it below.
